Control Units
Essex County Fire and Rescue Service operates a single control unit for use at major incidents. There are no hard and fast rules to state when the control unit is deployed although it is usually utilised for incidents that require 6 or more pumps. In the past, the Control Unit has been based at the Fire Service Headquarters but in recent times it has been moved to one of the Service's wholetime stations. The Control Unit is normally crewed by members of that wholetime station but can be operated by another retained crew.
The control unit functions as a base of operations at major incidents offering positions for senior staff, comunications operators and BA control.
